What is work scale?

The concept of work schedule refers to the way each company organizes the work day of its employees, aiming for greater productivity. For this reason, the scales vary according to the needs of the employer and the determinations established by the syndicate of each category.

Workday, in turn, refers to the length of time that collaborating is available to fulfill the activities established in contract by the employer.

Now that these concepts are clearer, how about understanding how a work scale is done? Then follow up!

Assumptions of work

Firstly, it is necessary to define the working premises. But, what are these premises? These are the fundamentals that will underpin the organization of the work scale. How many teams does the company have? Do these teams work at different times? Which employees are available at certain times?

Questions like these are basis for the formation of the premises. Another important point to highlight is the holidays. And, the rules of entry and exit, as is the fulfillment of schedules and standards that must be followed during the work day.

With the pre-established premises, it is time to define the scale, that is, the period that will be worked according to the week, month and etc. The following is a more detailed discussion of this issue. Come on?

How to do the work scale?

To organize the work scale efficiently, some points must be taken into account. We will list the main ones below. Watch:

  • Be knowledgeable in Labor Laws concerning Weekly Homes, Intra and Interday Journeys (Articles 66, 67, 68 and 71 of CLT, Article 7 of the Federal Constitution);
  • Do not have work periods longer than 6 days in a row, and do not leave employees unhurried on Sundays for more than 7 weeks in a row;
  • Have the needs of employees aligned with those of the company. For this, know the preferred day off, when will be your vacation, what the position and possible shifts of each and in which sectors work,
  • Knowing the needs of the employees, it is possible to have the relation of all the shifts and to make that everyone has equal rights with regard to the days and schedules to be fulfilled;
  • Assemble the work scale from one position at a time and update your data frequently, so planning will be more efficient.

Now that you have understood the points that must be considered when assembling a scale, we will know the existing types. Follow us!

The main scales of work

As we stated earlier, the scales vary according to the needs of each company. That is why there are scales of various types. The following are the main scales used:

  • Working Scale 5 × 1: every five days of work, the employee slacks one. Thus, one works six days a week and it is necessary to take one Sunday off every seven days. On this scale, the working day is 07h20min.
  • Working Scale 5 × 2: every five working days, it takes two days off that can be followed or not. Therefore, the collaborator works five days a week and about 08h48min hours a day.
  • Working Scale 6 × 1: every six days worked, the employee must have a day off. In addition, he must have a Sunday at least 7 consecutive weeks. Check out our Ready Scale of Work Schedules.
  • Working Scale 12 × 36: every twelve hours worked, the employee is entitled to thirty-six hours of rest. This type of scale is usually related to health and safety areas whose activities can not be interrupted in a shorter period of time.
  • Working Scale 18 × 36: every eighteen hours worked, the collaborator must take thirty-six hours.
  • Working Scale 24 × 48: every twenty-four hours worked, the employee is entitled to forty-eight hours of rest. These scales are used by toll collectors and some police sectors, for example.

As you can see, workloads help you organize your team schedules, make it easier to manage work hours, and optimize your business performance.

  1. Hi Diogo, normally you need to indulge one Sunday per month, which would be 7 more than 7 days and days less. Thank you for the warning.

  2. Hi André, To know exactly if these shifts and structure work, you need to analyze whether the difference in hours worked by a worker respects the limits set in the CLT from one shift and the other worked day. This should include intra- and extra-day intervals, night time (between 22h and 5h), analyze how this occurs on Saturdays and Sundays regarding overtime pay and so on.

  3. I would like to know if my work scale is correct Monday to Friday from 23: 00 to 07: 00 of the morning on Saturday we have to work from 23: 00 the 07: 00 from the morning being that until 03: 00 hs is normal rest until 07: 00 is 60% they say that during the week we are owing the company 1 hour by day where we pay on Saturday until 03: 00 in the morning and the most interesting is that this shift is fixed every day does not change we work all days at night ??

  4. It works as a working 6 workdays DAYS 07ha15h days off 2 days, then works 3 days 15h-23h days off 2h days and then works 3 days 23h to 07h and more days off 3 DAYS. The company has 3 shifts 07-15 15-23 and 23-07, not for any day of the week and has 4 working classes, ie on a 3 working day and a slack.

  5. Good Morning!

    You put:
Work Scale 5 × 1: every five working days, the employee slides one. Thus, one works six days a week and it is necessary to take one Sunday off every seven days. On this scale, the working day is 07h20min.

"It's necessary to take a Sunday off every seven days" ??

Would not it be "necessary to take a Sunday off every seven weeks"?

    Thank you

  6. Hi Luc, I'm not an expert on labor law and the details of the number of hours worked minimum or maximum. I recommend that you talk to a specialist.

One caution you must have is that the times between 22: 00 and 5: 00 are considered nocturnal and should have an additional one. Another care is that the night time has a different accounting of the normal hours of the day.

  7. could you help me in this case. Thank you
Regarding scales, I'd like to know if I can in a sector that needs to run 24 per day, have 07 time scales: 20 daily, with 3 shifts running fixed, but how do I need to work on Sunday would have a party with a joke 07: 20 only a few days in the morning, another day in the afternoon and another day in the night and would not complete 220: 00 monthly.

I just do not know if this can legally happen, or if you have another suggestion.

  8. Hi, Izabel, the biggest problem with ready-to-use worksheets is the specifics of each business (time, 6 × 1, 5 × 1, weekends, etc.). Unfortunately we do not have a spreadsheet ready with this, but it is certainly possible to create one with a good knowledge of Excel. If this is your intention we are going to say that I can help more and explain some paths that I think are important, but we do not do the custom itself.

  9. I actually need help formatting a worksheet that works like this:
Nowadays they work Saturdays and Sundays, and they do a relay one weekend 2 work on Saturday and they play on Sunday and the next one reverses.
My need is to build this scale so that they can get at least a day off on a weekday or get a weekend full on Saturday and Sunday together. I do not know if you have to compose this with this 07h20min 5 × 1 workload?
If you are kind enough to inform me or prove to me, that we buy a Worksheet, as long as it works without changing the workload.
    Thank you.

  10. Hi Almir, I apologize if I could not help with the first comment. In general, it is possible to make a contract amendment yes, but this may depend on a series of specific items in your area that I do not know and would not know how they work.

Some references that may help you:

I advise you to seek a lawyer or accountant who knows specifically the details of the legislation that can be applied to work in mining.

  11. I need to know if it's possible to make a deal, and work on his work contract to work 5 days and 2 days off.

  12. Hi Almir,

many details depend on the employment contract and collective agreements that may exist with the Union in question.

In general, if an employee has a work contract from Monday to Friday, you should receive overtime by working at a different time than stipulated (for example, Saturdays and Sundays).

  13. I am currently working in mining, production workers who work from Monday to Friday, and enjoy Saturday and Sunday. They work on 8 media: 30 hours a day, making a media from 1 to 1: 30 per day of overtime (Monday to Friday), meaning that 10 hs a day. Sao 9 officials in this sector.
They asked me to study the possibility of hiring more 3 officials, to work on staggering, with 5 × 2 relay, 5 work X8 gap, alternating with these 2 new officials, so that the company can work from Sunday to Sunday.
Remembering they would continue to make 8: 30 hours daily + 1: 50 extras, daily.

I did a simulation, which I see would work. They would always have at least 1 Sunday every 7 weeks.

Would it be right to work this way?
How much work Sunday and holiday on the scale, have to pay doubled or not?

I have this doubt before presenting a collective agreement.

I will be very grateful if anyone can advise.

    Att. Almir Hermes de Morais
