O strategic planning model of a company is an essential part of the life of the organization. From it, all goals are set important for business growth. In addition, good planning allows the company to grow prosperously and sustainably.
Now, one of the biggest difficulties for managers is to organize the strategic planning results in a way that is simple to do and practical to follow. The truth is that a Planning template in Excel can be an excellent answer to that problem, as long as it has all the necessary functionality. It should not only allow you to fill in data, but also calculate results and provide feedback on the status of your planning, automatically.
At LUZ, we developed a Planning template in Excel ready in a spreadsheet. Check out all the steps in developing a strategic plan and understand how to use the spreadsheet in detail:
Step 1 - Filling in the General Assumptions
Before you begin strategic planning, you must complete the general assumptions (General Assets tab). Completing these fields will allow the worksheet to generate the information you need for your strategy. At this point, you fill in the name of your business, the year you started your planning, and the number of planned years.
We usually recommend that your Planning template in Excel has 1 year duration, so it's easier to keep track of planning and make changes, but the worksheet is up to 5 years old. In addition, you must complete information related to the company's Mission, Vision and Values.
Although they do not affect other parts of the worksheet quantitatively, they are essential to assist in your planning and should be taken into account when you are creating goals and strategies:
Now you must meet the specific goals of your planning. To do this click on the Specific Goals button. They are already automatically populated, so review and change only what you feel is necessary.
Step 2 - Defining your goals
We deeply believe in a Planning template in Excel totally simplified. Therefore, by adopting goals, we separated 4 main areas. It is likely that your company has more areas or even more goals, but the point here is to simplify the most important:
Step 3 - Choosing the strategy
Once you have fulfilled the basic premises and general goals, you must define your strategy through the Strategy. This tab has several tables that must be fed monthly with data. Notice that there is spreadsheet for several areas of the company:
With this planning, you can track the partial and total results of your plan with greater accuracy. Our biggest recommendation is simplification, with a choice of at most 3 goals by area to be accompanied.
After choosing, complete the spreadsheet with the planned result (it can be the full year or next month only) and follow the results month by month.
Step 4 - Draw the action plan
Once you have made the basic premises of your strategy, you should draw a action plan for your strategic planning model. One of the great uses of this tab is to be able to monitor the status of actions and activities related to the goals that make up your strategic planning results.
Step 5 - Track the consolidated results
If you have performed all the actions rightly so far, the time has come to analyze your results. You must monitor the implementation of your strategic planning results through the Consolidated Results tab, which is automatic generating information from the data reported in the previous tabs.
On the Alerts and Tips tab, you get important tips and insights related to the consolidation status of your strategic planning results.
Step 6 - Graphs of the Planning Model in Excel
And on the flap Print Reports, you can print all the data related to the strategic planning.
Notice how this is spreadsheet simplifies the creation, consolidation and strategic planning results of your company. Just fill in the data, and track the results. In this way it is possible to quickly identify the points that are at odds and quickly remedy these points.
